Mild Orange Celebrates Creative Freedom with New Album The//Glow

Mild Orange, the independent band known for their eclectic sound, is making waves with their new album, The//Glow, which pays homage to their experiences in London and their love for heartland rock. The group, formed by friends from Otago University, has seen significant success since their debut album, Foreplay, was released in 2018. Tracks like ‘Some Feeling’ and ‘Freak In Me’ have collectively garnered tens of millions of streams, demonstrating their growing popularity in the online music scene.
A Shift to London and Its Influence on Their Music
Since relocating to London in 2022, the band members have embraced the city’s vibrant nightlife while adjusting to life in a bustling metropolis. Mehrtens, one of the band’s vocalists, shared that the transition was significant, but now, three years later, they are enjoying the “strong” live music scene that London has to offer.
As an “internet band,” Mild Orange has enjoyed a largely positive experience in the digital music landscape, free from the pressures often associated with traditional record labels. Mehrtens expressed pride in their ability to connect with listeners globally, stating, “Over the years, we’ve just cultivated a lovely listenership and really made an effort to connect with people in all corners of the earth.” He emphasized their identity as a Kiwi band aiming to create music that resonates universally.
Creative Independence and Musical Exploration
Being an independent band allows Mild Orange to maintain control over their creative direction. “Maybe [record] labels are scared to talk to us or something,” Mehrtens suggested, highlighting their unique position in the industry. The band’s approach to music is characterized by an absence of strict genre boundaries; instead, they create based on their feelings and experiences.
Their latest track, ‘My Light’, showcases this philosophy. The song, which explores themes related to digital media and personal reflection, features a minimalist structure with just two chords layered with intricate sounds. Mehrtens described the creative process as challenging yet rewarding, stating, “I’m so glad we persisted with it – it’s a bit of a banger.” The song also serves as a tribute to his wife, Summer, illustrating the personal connection that fuels their artistry.
“The weight of the world can get a bit intense sometimes, but she’s always there for me,” he added, underscoring the emotional depth behind their music. As Mild Orange continues to evolve, their journey reflects not only their musical aspirations but also their commitment to authenticity and connection in an increasingly digital world.
