Shah Rukh Khan and Rani Mukerji Triumph at 71st National Film Awards

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has announced the winners of the 71st National Film Awards, recognizing outstanding contributions to Indian cinema for the year 2023. This year’s awards spotlight a diverse range of films, celebrating excellence in acting, direction, and production.
Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan has won his first National Award for Best Actor for his compelling performance in the action thriller Jawan, directed by Atlee. He shares this honor with Vikrant Massey, who was acknowledged for his role in the biographical film 12th Fail, based on the life of IPS officer Manoj Kumar Sharma. Notably, 12th Fail also received the prestigious award for Best Feature Film.
In the Best Actress category, Rani Mukerji was recognized for her moving portrayal in Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway, where she plays a mother fighting for her children’s custody against foreign authorities. The film’s emotional depth has resonated with audiences and critics alike.
Directorial Excellence and Other Highlights
The award for Best Director went to Sudipto Sen for The Kerala Story. Meanwhile, Karan Johar’s Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani was awarded Best Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment.
In a standout moment for technical achievement, Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal secured three awards, including Best Background Score and Best Sound Design. This film, starring Ranbir Kapoor, has sparked considerable discussion since its release.
Recognition of Regional Cinema and Social Themes
The National Film Awards also highlighted works promoting national and social values. Vicky Kaushal’s Sam Bahadur, which chronicles the life of India’s first Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, received the award for Best Film Promoting National and Social Values. The film also garnered awards for Best Make-Up and Best Costume Design.
In regional cinema, Parking, directed by Ramkumar Balakrishnan, stood out by winning awards for Best Tamil Film, Best Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actor for M.S. Bhaskar. The Best Actress (Regional) award was jointly given to Nithya Menen for Thiruchitrambalam and Manasi Parekh for the Gujarati film Kutch Express.
The 71st National Film Awards reflect the changing landscape of Indian cinema, where mainstream stars, biographical narratives, and socially relevant stories are gaining equal recognition on a national platform. This year’s winners represent a broad spectrum of talent and thematic depth, showcasing the vibrant and evolving nature of the industry.
