Kiwi Experts Address Menopause: Insights on Symptoms and Support

World Menopause Day highlights the challenges many women face during menopause, including symptoms such as irritability, cognitive difficulties, and changes in libido. Experts underscore the importance of understanding these experiences. In a recent discussion, Dr. Sylvia Rosevear, an Auckland-based obstetrician and gynaecologist, and Sarah Connor, founder of the grassroots group Menopause Over Martinis, provided insights into what many women might be experiencing during this significant life phase.
Menopause can bring about a range of symptoms, often leading women to question their mental health. One common concern is the phenomenon referred to as “brain fog.” This term describes a state of mental cloudiness, often characterized by forgetfulness, lack of focus, and difficulty in processing information. Dr. Rosevear clarifies that brain fog is a legitimate experience for many women undergoing menopause, attributing it to hormonal changes that impact cognitive function.
The emotional effects of menopause can also be profound. Anger and irritability are frequently reported, leaving many women feeling overwhelmed. According to Sarah Connor, these feelings can stem from a combination of physiological changes and the societal pressures women face. “Women often feel isolated during this time, and that can amplify feelings of anger or frustration,” she notes.
Sarah Connor emphasizes the need for open conversations surrounding menopause. Her organization, Menopause Over Martinis, aims to create a supportive community where women can share their experiences and seek guidance. “We need to normalize these discussions, not just in private but also in workplaces and social settings,” she states. Connor believes that breaking the silence around menopause can lead to greater understanding and improved support systems.
Awareness and education are crucial on World Menopause Day, which is observed annually on October 18. The day serves as a reminder to both women and healthcare providers to prioritize discussions about menopause. Dr. Rosevear urges women to seek professional advice when experiencing troubling symptoms. “It’s essential to reach out for help; there are effective treatments available that can alleviate many of these symptoms,” she explains.
Furthermore, Dr. Rosevear highlights the importance of lifestyle changes in managing menopause symptoms. Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and mindfulness practices can significantly improve overall well-being. “These changes can help mitigate some of the more challenging aspects of menopause,” she adds.
Support from partners and families also plays a critical role during this transition. Open communication can foster understanding and help partners navigate the changes together. Connor reflects on her own journey, noting how conversation with her partner about her experiences with menopause opened doors to greater empathy and support.
While menopause can be a challenging phase for many women, the insights shared by Dr. Rosevear and Connor illustrate that support and information are vital. By fostering open dialogues and encouraging women to seek help, both experts advocate for a more informed and compassionate approach to menopause.
