Doha, Qatar: The Lusail International Circuit (LIC) has achieved the prestigious Three-Star Environmental Accreditation from the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), marking it as the only venue globally to hold this distinction while hosting major motorsport events such as Formula 1, MotoGP, and the FIA World Endurance Championship.

This accolade reflects LIC’s commitment to sustainability, community engagement, and fan welfare, particularly highlighted during the recent 2024 Formula 1 Qatar Airways Qatar Grand Prix. The event prominently featured initiatives aligned with both Qatar’s National Vision 2030 and the FIA’s global sustainability goals.

Commitment to Sustainability and Community Engagement

Leading up to this recognition, LIC undertook a series of impactful initiatives aimed at promoting environmental stewardship and local economic growth. These efforts included an educational tour that introduced over 1,000 students from various educational institutions to the world of motorsport operations.

In a drive to enhance coastal biodiversity, LIC staff planted mangroves at Al Thakhira, while collaborations with the University of Doha for Science and Technology provided valuable internship opportunities. The circuit also organized community activities, such as the Mix Training Days, which attracted more than 300 participants daily, promoting wellness and community involvement.

As part of its environmental initiatives, LIC integrated eco-friendly design into its operations, featuring 2,500 native trees and 30,000 drought-resistant plants. The facility aims to double its green space by 2027, further showcasing its commitment to environmental sustainability.

Innovative Waste Management and Renewable Energy Efforts

The circuit has implemented advanced monitoring systems to track air quality, noise levels, and weather conditions, enabling data-driven decisions for continuous improvement. A 1.23 megawatt rooftop solar array generates approximately 3 million kilowatt hours of energy annually, further supporting the circuit’s renewable energy goals.

During the Grand Prix, accessibility initiatives included a sensory room in the FanZone for visitors with diverse learning needs, as well as a customized pit walk for students requiring additional support. The event emphasized inclusivity, with facilities designed to enhance the experience for all attendees.

Community involvement reached new heights, with 665 volunteers from 107 nationalities contributing to the event’s success. Engagement activities promoted eco-responsibility, including recycling initiatives and interactive games focused on waste segregation.

LIC’s commitment to waste management resulted in a remarkable 86.6% recycling segregation rate during the event, aligning with Qatar’s national sustainability targets. Digital ticketing processes helped avoid 2.5 metric tons of CO2 emissions, while surplus food management strategies reduced food waste by 95%, with remaining supplies donated to local families through the partner organization Wa’hab.

These comprehensive efforts demonstrate LIC’s leadership in sustainable motorsport, significantly enhancing fan experiences while minimizing environmental impact. Preliminary data indicates a 15% increase in public transport usage compared to the previous year, showcasing a growing commitment to eco-friendly transportation options.

As Lusail International Circuit continues to build on its environmental initiatives, it positions itself as a model for sustainability in the motorsport industry, leading the way for future events and inspiring others to follow suit.
