Pacific Women to Engage in Health Awareness at Oamaru Event

Pacific women in Oamaru will have the opportunity to engage in crucial health discussions and receive immediate cervical cancer screenings at the Moana Lei Pink Event on September 30, 2023. This event, part of the Cervical Screening Awareness Month, is a collaborative effort involving the Oamaru Pacific Island Trust (OPIT), WellSouth Primary Health Network, and Te Whatu Ora Health New Zealand’s national cervical screening programme.

The OPIT chief executive, Mata’aga Hana Fanene-Taiti, emphasized that this year’s event aims to address significant health conditions affecting Pacific women that are often overlooked in conversations. She stated, “This time around, we wanted to focus on building health awareness on cancer, cardiovascular risks and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).”

Key Health Topics and Services Offered

The Moana Lei Pink Event will take place at the new OPIT Ribble St Hub from 10:00 to 14:00. Attendees will have access to multiple health resources, including cervical screening registration and on-the-spot screenings provided by staff from the national cervical screening programme.

Dr Letava Tafuna’i, a general practitioner and WellSouth’s Pasifika senior clinical adviser, will lead discussions on PCOS, screening procedures, and cardiovascular disease risks. Additionally, Robyn Cleverley, an OPIT nurse, will be present to assist with cervical screening efforts throughout the day.

This initiative not only aims to raise awareness of these health issues but also seeks to create a supportive environment where Pacific women feel comfortable discussing their health concerns. By focusing on preventive measures and health education, the event encourages proactive steps towards better health outcomes.
