Toa Henderson Wins Royal Welsh Show All-Nations Open Title

Kaiwaka shearer Toa Henderson has achieved a remarkable victory at the Royal Welsh Show, securing the title of All-Nations Open champion. Henderson completed the shearing of 20 Welsh speckle lambs in an impressive time of 12 minutes and 38 seconds, outpacing his nearest competitor, reigning World Champion Gwion Lloyd Evans, who finished in 13 minutes and 23 seconds.
This victory not only highlights Henderson’s exceptional skill but also adds to his already impressive accolades. In March 2023, he clinched the Golden Shears and New Zealand Open championships, establishing himself as a leading figure in the shearing community. Currently, he is on a six-test match tour across the British Isles alongside fellow Kiwi competitor Jack Fagan.
Historic Win at the Royal Welsh Show
The Royal Welsh Show, marking its 50th anniversary this year, provided a vibrant backdrop for Henderson’s triumph. With his father, Mike Henderson, in attendance, Toa expressed his joy at winning during his first tour of the United Kingdom. Upon receiving the Godfrey Bowen Memorial Trophy, he dedicated the win to his family, stating, “I did it for us.”
In a separate test match between Wales and New Zealand, the Welsh team, comprised of Evans and Llyr Jones, managed to defeat Henderson and Fagan. The match showcased the intense competition between the two nations, with only a five-second gap separating Fagan, Evans, and Henderson during another 20-lamb shearing event. Ultimately, the Welsh team’s quality shone through, earning them a 2-0 lead in the annual series, a title last held by a New Zealand team in Wales six years ago.
Competition and Future Challenges
Despite the setback in the test match, Henderson remains undeterred. His strategy of employing speed to outpace the Welsh shearers did not achieve the desired outcome, but the experience contributes to his growth as a competitor. As he continues his tour, he aims to refine his technique and capitalize on his strengths in upcoming matches.
Henderson’s journey through the British Isles not only highlights his prowess in shearing but also reflects the rich culture and competitive spirit shared between New Zealand and Wales. As the tour progresses, both he and Fagan look forward to further challenges and the opportunity to improve their standings in this annual competition.
With a strong showing at the Royal Welsh Show, Toa Henderson has solidified his reputation on the international stage. His dedication to the sport and his family continues to inspire both fans and fellow competitors alike.
