Celebrated Tennis Player Evelyn Webster Passes Away at 101

Evelyn Webster, a prominent figure in the tennis world during the 1940s, passed away in late August at the age of 101. Known for her remarkable achievements in the sport, she left an indelible mark on both national and international tennis.
Born Evelyn Attwood, she first gained recognition as a junior tennis player, winning the junior girls’ national title in 1941. Her talent continued to shine as she clinched the national ladies’ singles championship in 1948. Following her success in New Zealand, she set her sights on England, where she relocated in 1950.
During her time in England, from 1951 to 1955, Evelyn worked as a full-time secretary in London while competing in tennis tournaments. She participated in four Wimbledon tournaments, showcasing her skills in both singles and doubles competitions. Although she faced stiff competition at Wimbledon, her real success came from playing county tennis, where she secured numerous tournament victories.
Upon her return to New Zealand in late 1954, Evelyn married fellow tennis enthusiast Eric Webster. Together, they were instrumental in establishing an anchorage at Smokehouse Bay in Port Fitzroy on Great Barrier Island, which became affectionately known as Webster’s Wonderland. This site has since become a cherished destination for locals and visitors alike.
Evelyn Webster’s legacy extends beyond her impressive tennis career. She was a beloved figure in her community and an inspiration to many aspiring athletes. Her contributions to the sport and the establishment of Webster’s Wonderland are testament to her enduring spirit and commitment to her passions.
As the tennis community mourns her passing, Evelyn Webster will be remembered not only for her achievements on the court but also for her vibrant life and the positive impact she had on those around her.
