Elvis Festival Celebrates 20 Years of Tribute and Legacy
This weekend, fans of the legendary Elvis Presley will gather at the Cosmopolitan Club in Upper Hutt, New Zealand, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Elvis Down Under. The event, renowned as the country’s largest Elvis festival and tribute competition, runs from October 17 to October 19, 2023, and promises a weekend filled with music, camaraderie, and a touch of nostalgia.
The festival was founded by Cathy Finau, who has decided to step back from her role to prioritize her health. As the driving force behind the event for two decades, Finau expressed her bittersweet feelings about this transition while preparing for the festival. “The last 20 years have been an amazing ride,” she shared, getting her nails painted in pink and black. Despite her departure, she assured fans, “I’ll still be in touch with everybody.”
This year’s festival showcases the growing popularity of Elvis among younger generations. The competition will feature participants ranging from just 15 years old to 62, highlighting a vibrant mix of fans eager to carry on the King’s legacy. Kimberley McCheyne, the new event organizer from Pacific Kings ProductioNZ, noted that while Finau’s retirement brings a sense of loss, the weekend is ultimately a celebration of two decades of dedication to Elvis.
The event is almost sold out, reflecting its significance in the Elvis tribute community. Activities include quizzes, a two-hour gospel performance, and an Elvis impersonation competition, with Dean Vegas serving as the event’s MC. An impressive total of 18 impersonators will compete for the coveted prize, with participants travelling from Australia and even Rarotonga. The top prize includes two tickets to the upcoming Cooly Rocks On festival, a major event on the Gold Coast next year.
McCheyne emphasized the unique allure of Elvis, stating that his music is only part of what draws fans to him. The singer’s authenticity and down-to-earth persona resonate with audiences, making events like Elvis Down Under essential for keeping his memory alive. As fans prepare for a weekend filled with Elvis’s iconic music and vibrant performances, the spirit of celebration and community remains at the forefront of this cherished festival.
