Elizabeth Knox Returns to Young Adult Fiction with ‘Kings of this World’

Renowned New Zealand author Elizabeth Knox has made her return to young adult literature with the release of her new novel, Kings of this World. This marks her first foray into the genre in over a decade, following her acclaimed works such as Vintner’s Luck and The Absolute Book. The novel delves into the harrowing story of the sole survivor of a cult massacre, showcasing Knox’s ability to weave complex narratives that resonate with both young and adult audiences.
Knox revealed that the journey to create Kings of this World spanned several years. In an interview with Newstalk ZB host Jack Tame, she explained her unique writing process. “I had the bad habit of writing several books at the same time,” she shared. This approach helped her manage distractions and maintain a sense of control over her work. Despite the chaos in her life, Knox found herself returning to this method, though she humorously acknowledged it as a “bad habit.”
Exploring Themes of Hope and Fear
While writing for young adults poses its own set of challenges, Knox emphasized that the core principles remain similar to adult fiction. One key aspect she adheres to is the necessity of providing readers with a sense of hope. “You can’t deprive the readers of hope,” she noted. This understanding allowed her to craft a gripping thriller without shying away from suspense or fear. She believes that young readers can handle complex emotions and narratives, making her book an engaging read for its intended audience.
The novel’s central theme of survival in the aftermath of a tragedy resonates deeply, especially in today’s context where young people navigate their own challenges. Knox’s commitment to ensuring that her readers encounter suspense while still feeling a sense of hope sets her work apart in the young adult genre.
As Knox embarks on this new chapter in her writing career, Kings of this World not only revitalizes her connection with younger audiences but also reaffirms her position as a versatile and thoughtful author. The book promises to captivate readers with its blend of thrilling narrative and emotional depth, making it a noteworthy addition to contemporary young adult literature.
In a literary landscape that often underestimates the emotional resilience of young readers, Knox’s insights and storytelling prowess provide a refreshing perspective. Her novel stands as a testament to her belief that young adults can engage with and appreciate complex themes, all while finding solace in the hope that permeates her narrative.
