Elizabeth Knox Returns with Gripping Young Adult Novel ‘Kings of this World’

Acclaimed New Zealand author Elizabeth Knox has made a notable return to young adult literature with her new novel, Kings of this World. This gripping story centers on the sole survivor of a cult massacre, marking her first young adult work in over a decade. The novel reflects Knox’s long-term dedication to her craft, as she worked on it for several years.
Writing for younger audiences presents its own challenges, and Knox acknowledges a distinct approach when crafting her stories for this demographic. In an interview with Newstalk ZB host Jack Tame, she shared insights about her writing process. “I had the bad habit of writing several books at the same time,” she noted. This method emerged as a way to manage various distractions in her life, allowing her to regain a sense of control over her writing.
Despite the complexity of her writing habits, Knox admits that this approach may not always be beneficial. “I thought I’d solved the problem and could always keep doing that, but no,” she confessed, labeling it a “bad habit.”
Exploring Themes of Hope and Suspense
While the genre of young adult fiction may seem similar to adult writing, Knox emphasizes a crucial principle when addressing younger readers. “You can’t deprive the readers of hope,” she explained. This guiding philosophy enabled her to create a thrilling narrative that incorporates elements of suspense and fear, which she believes young readers can handle without being shielded from the darker aspects of storytelling.
This belief in providing hope is especially significant in the context of Kings of this World. The novel’s protagonist faces harrowing circumstances, yet Knox is committed to ensuring that the journey ultimately offers a sense of optimism.
As Knox steps back into the realm of young adult fiction, she blends her established literary prowess with fresh themes that resonate with both her returning audience and new readers. Her previous works, such as Vintner’s Luck and The Absolute Book, have garnered critical acclaim, solidifying her status as one of New Zealand’s most esteemed authors.
With Kings of this World, Elizabeth Knox not only reaffirms her talent but also addresses the evolving landscape of young adult literature. Her approach seeks to engage young minds with complex narratives while instilling a vital sense of hope, even in the face of adversity. As readers delve into this latest work, they can expect a compelling blend of tension and resilience, hallmarks of Knox’s storytelling craft.
