The Tiny House Expo, held from October 31 to November 2, aims to educate potential homeowners about the benefits and considerations of transitioning to a tiny home lifestyle.

According to Sharla May, a tiny home expert from the Tiny House Expo, this trend is not merely a passing fad. “Tiny homes aren’t a fad. They’ve given people a way into homeownership, they’ve rescued retirees from big house maintenance, they’ve let families rethink what security looks like,” she states. However, she emphasizes that prospective tiny homeowners must prepare adequately and understand the implications of their choice.

Many individuals, like Kennedy Hardy and Alex Matthews, are embracing this lifestyle as a practical entry point into homeownership. The couple, both 21, constructed their own 3m by 10m tiny home in Kaukapakapa, north of Auckland. After six months of building, they completed their project, which they estimate cost around $40,000. This is significantly less than the $150,000 they would have spent on a traditional home.

“We were both living at home and wanted to get out without paying rent,” Hardy explains. “It’s been a steep learning curve, but we’re thrilled with the outcome.” The couple plans to eventually purchase land for their tiny home or sell it to contribute towards a deposit for a larger house.

Dave Miller, a boat builder from Tauranga, has transformed his backyard into a unique rental opportunity with a tiny home designed to resemble a railway carriage. Miller has spent years gathering materials, including vintage railway artifacts and even handles from the Queen’s coronation carriage.

“It’s gorgeous. It shows my creativity, and you can’t buy that,” Miller expresses. He has crafted a space filled with character and history, which he rents out as a bed and breakfast.

Another perspective on tiny living comes from Kevin Beattie, a retired truck driver who has created a comfortable space for himself in a tiny home known as MyPod. Located on his daughter and son-in-law’s property, this 42m² residence is outfitted with modern amenities and thoughtful design choices. Beattie invested around $300,000 in his home, which includes luxury features such as smart blinds and custom storage solutions.

Living independently but close to family, Beattie enjoys the best of both worlds. He acknowledges the importance of planning for the future, ensuring that his children are considered in his estate planning.

While the appeal of tiny homes is clear, May cautions potential buyers about the challenges involved. Hidden costs related to earthworks, council consents, and utility connections can add up. “You need to consider practical aspects like where you will place your home and what systems are in place for wastewater disposal,” she advises.

May highlights the importance of having a backup plan, especially if personal circumstances change, such as a relationship ending or a land lease expiring.

Individuals drawn to the tiny home lifestyle often prioritize experiences over material possessions and value freedom over space. “They like things simple, but not boring,” May notes. “Many have realized that less house means more life.”
