Tributes Pour In for John Roy-Wojciechowski, a Life of Service

John Roy-Wojciechowski, a beloved figure in both Poland and New Zealand, passed away on August 23, 2025, at the age of 91. Known affectionately as John Roy, he was deeply respected for his contributions to the community, his business acumen, and his commitment to preserving Polish heritage. A service celebrating his life was held at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church in Howick, where family, friends, and dignitaries gathered to pay tribute.
The funeral service, led by Father John Fitzmaurice on August 29, was attended by a diverse assembly of individuals, ranging from local residents to members of the Polish community in New Zealand. Among those present was Sir Don McKinnon, a former Deputy Prime Minister and Commonwealth Secretary-General, who acknowledged the significant impact Roy had on the community.
Born in Poland on September 25, 1933, as Janek Wojciechowski, Roy experienced the horrors of war at a young age. His childhood was marred by the invasion of Poland in 1939, followed by the tragic deportation of his family to Siberian labour camps. His father was executed by Soviet forces, and after enduring immense hardships, Roy’s family found temporary shelter in Persia, now Iran, where they were cared for by nuns. Tragically, his mother passed away during this period, leaving Roy and his siblings orphaned.
In 1944, Roy arrived in New Zealand as part of the Pahiatua Children, a group of Polish orphans granted refuge. This moment marked a turning point in his life, providing him with the opportunity to rebuild and thrive in a new homeland. He later attended St Patrick’s College, Silverstream, where he began to learn English and quickly excelled in academics and sports.
Roy pursued higher education in accounting, which led him to a successful career in business. He worked for several firms, including W & R Fletcher and Charles Begg & Co, where he played a pivotal role in transforming the company into a national powerhouse, known for its iconic Atlas stoves. His entrepreneurial spirit eventually led him to establish himself as a consultant, helping struggling businesses regain profitability.
Despite his commercial success, Roy remained committed to giving back to his community. He was appointed Honorary Polish Consul to New Zealand in 1999 and received the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2017 for his service to the Polish community and philanthropy. His efforts extended to various charitable organizations, including the Polish Heritage Trust Museum in Howick, which he helped establish to educate others about Polish history and culture.
A heartfelt eulogy delivered by his son, Greg Roy, captured the essence of his father’s life. “He accomplished more in one lifetime than most would in ten,” Greg reflected, highlighting Roy’s remarkable achievements and resilience. Roy’s legacy is further encapsulated in a letter of condolence from the President of Poland, Karol Nawrocki, who praised him as a “pillar of the Polish community in New Zealand.”
The Polish Ambassador to New Zealand, Patryk Błaszczak, also paid tribute, emphasizing Roy’s generosity and enduring impact on both the Polish and New Zealand communities. He noted that Roy’s life story was one of survival and triumph, underscoring how he turned personal adversity into a force for good.
As family gatherings grew larger over the years, Roy cherished moments spent with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His passion for boating and the sea became a cherished family tradition, with countless memories made during holidays in the Bay of Islands and sailing trips around the world.
John Roy-Wojciechowski’s contributions to society and his unwavering commitment to his heritage have left an indelible mark on both the New Zealand and Polish communities. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations, ensuring that his story and the stories of others like him are never forgotten. As his family reflected, he was not only a survivor and a successful businessman but also a loving father and a proud citizen of two nations.
