New Zealand Ministry Aids Citizen Detained in U.S. Prison

The New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) is currently providing assistance to a citizen detained in the United States. Officials clarified that the individual is not being held in an immigration facility, contrary to earlier media reports.
Reports emerged linking the consular assistance to a social media post claiming that a New Zealander had been awaiting sentencing in a U.S. prison since August. The post alleged that the individual was accused of assaulting a police officer, though a judge later dismissed the charge. Following this, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) became involved.
A spokesperson for MFAT issued a statement confirming the situation. “Consular officials are providing assistance to a New Zealander in detention in the United States. Note, this is not an immigration facility, as has been incorrectly reported. For privacy reasons, no further information will be provided.”
This incident marks the second case of a New Zealander facing detention in recent months. In a previous case, Sarah Shaw and her six-year-old son were detained upon re-entering the United States from Canada. They had just dropped off her other children for a flight in Vancouver. After three weeks, Shaw and her son returned home to Washington “in good spirits.”
MFAT continues to emphasize its commitment to assisting New Zealand citizens abroad while maintaining the privacy of those involved. The ministry’s role is crucial in ensuring that New Zealanders receive the necessary support during challenging situations. As these cases unfold, the ministry urges the public to refrain from speculation and respect the privacy of individuals affected.
