All Blacks Legend Desmond “Lloyd” Ashby Passes Away at 94

Desmond “Lloyd” Ashby, one of the oldest living players to have represented the All Blacks, has passed away at the age of 94. Ashby died at his home in Dunedin on Monday, leaving behind a legacy that intertwines with New Zealand rugby history. He played in a single test match for the All Blacks in 1958 against Australia and enjoyed a successful domestic career with Southland during the 1950s.
Ashby’s contribution to rugby transcended his brief international career. He participated in 59 games for Southland, significantly contributing to the team’s triumph in the Ranfurly Shield in 1959. His performances on the field earned him respect and admiration among teammates and fans alike.
In the wake of his passing, New Zealand rugby icon Justin Marshall, who is Ashby’s great-nephew, expressed his sorrow and shared heartfelt memories. On social media, Marshall acknowledged the impact his great-uncle had on his own rugby journey, which included playing 81 tests for the All Blacks.
“A very sad day today,” Marshall wrote on Instagram. “My great-uncle Lloyd Ashby, my Dad’s [Fridge] uncle, passed away. Thank you for being an inspiration.”
Marshall’s tribute reflects the deep familial ties within the sport, highlighting how Ashby’s legacy has influenced generations of players.
As the rugby community mourns the loss of Ashby, his contributions to the game will be remembered not only for his on-field achievements but also for the inspiration he provided to future players. His life and career serve as a reminder of the rich history and traditions that underlie the sport in New Zealand.
Ashby’s passing marks the end of an era, as he embodied the spirit of rugby that continues to resonate among players and fans today.
