Black Ferns Gear Up for World Cup Clash Against Japan

The Black Ferns have finalized their lineup for the upcoming match against Japan in the Women’s Rugby World Cup, scheduled for Monday, October 16, 2023, in Exeter. The team sees the return of loose forward Kennedy Tukuafu, who will make her first test appearance since the Pacific Four Series match against the USA. Co-captains Alana Bremner and Ruahei Demant will lead the side once more as they aim to build on a strong opening performance.
In a significant boost for the squad, prop Kate Henwood returns from an ankle injury to make her World Cup debut. She joins fellow teammates Katelyn Vahaakolo, Atlanta Lolohea, Veisinia Mahutariki-Fakalelu, and Maia Joseph in the matchday squad. The Black Ferns are coming off a decisive 54-8 victory over Spain, while Japan seeks to recover after a 42-14 loss to Ireland.
Strategic Insights from the Coaching Staff
The Black Ferns’ director of performance, Allan Bunting, expressed confidence in his team’s preparations. “It’s fantastic to be in Exeter. We have had a focused week of training,” Bunting stated. “Having Kennedy and Kate back is crucial. Their determination to reach this pinnacle event is a proud moment for the entire squad.”
Bunting acknowledged Japan’s capabilities, noting their strong performance in the previous week. “Japan played well last week and is well-coached. We expect them to challenge us significantly. We’ve selected a team we believe will rise to the occasion,” he added.
A standout player to watch is Portia Woodman-Wickliffe, who could become New Zealand’s all-time leading try scorer with a touchdown against Japan. This potential achievement adds extra motivation for the team as they take the field.
