Black Ferns Ready for Challenge as Tukuafu Returns Against Japan

The Black Ferns have announced their lineup for the crucial second match against Japan in the Women’s Rugby World Cup, taking place in Exeter on March 18, 2024. Loose forward Kennedy Tukuafu will make her return, starting in her first test since the Black Ferns faced the USA during the 2025 Pacific Four Series. Co-captains Alana Bremner and Ruahei Demant will lead the team once again, emphasizing the squad’s resolve as they aim for another victory.
Prop Kate Henwood also makes her comeback from an ankle injury, marking her World Cup debut. She joins teammates Katelyn Vahaakolo, Atlanta Lolohea, Veisinia Mahutariki-Fakalelu, and Maia Joseph in strengthening the side. Notably, Portia Woodman-Wickliffe is on the verge of becoming New Zealand’s all-time top try scorer if she manages to score against Japan.
Black Ferns director of performance Allan Bunting expressed optimism about the team’s preparations, stating, “It’s awesome to be here in Exeter and we have had a focused week of preparations. It’s great to have Kennedy and Kate back in the team. Their grit and determination to get to where they are, at a pinnacle event is a special moment for not only for them but the entire squad.”
As the Black Ferns head into the match after a commanding 54-8 victory over Spain, Japan is looking to recover from a 42-14 defeat against Ireland. Bunting acknowledged Japan’s capabilities, noting, “They played well last week, they are well-coached, and we expect them to come out and throw everything at us. We’ve selected a team who we believe will rise to the occasion.”
