The New Zealand cricket team, known as the Black Caps, took charge of the test match against the West Indies at Hagley Oval in Christchurch, thanks to a stellar performance from bowler Matt Duffy. Duffy claimed five wickets for just 34 runs, helping to dismiss the West Indies for a mere 167 runs after they had been positioned comfortably at 100 for 2 earlier in the innings.

New Zealand’s first innings total of 231 meant that the West Indies faced a daunting task to stay competitive. Despite half-centuries from opener Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Shai Hope, the West Indies struggled to maintain momentum. As day two concluded, New Zealand had moved to 32 without loss, establishing an overall lead of 96 runs.

Duffy’s exceptional bowling was crucial in shifting the match’s balance. After New Zealand secured two early wickets on a lively track, Hope and Chanderpaul formed a resilient partnership, adding 90 runs for the third wicket. Hope was eventually dismissed for 56 after a sharp catch behind the stumps, which marked a turning point in the match. Following his exit, Matt Henry seized the moment by taking two wickets in quick succession, including that of West Indies captain Roston Chase.

Chanderpaul, who appeared shaky at the beginning and was dropped twice, managed to settle in and score 50 runs during a challenging 169-ball innings. His departure came when he attempted a pull shot off Zak Foulkes, only to see Devon Conway take a remarkable catch, compensating for his earlier mishap.

As play resumed after a rain delay, Duffy continued to assert dominance. He bowled a two-wicket maiden over, sending the West Indies into a rapid decline by dismissing Jayden Seales and Ojay Shields. Foulkes, reflecting on the day’s events, commented, “Obviously they got a bit of a partnership going, we knew they would at some stage, and it coincided with the ball stopping swinging. Duffy has taken on that enforcer role, which is awesome. It’s great to see. And then we actually saw it swing again at the end, which was interesting.”

With the West Indies on the back foot, the stage is set for New Zealand to build on their lead as Tom Latham and Devon Conway prepare to resume batting. Their objective will be to extend the lead significantly and put the West Indies out of contention as the match progresses.
