Former All Black Dr. Keith Nelson Passes Away at 86

Former All Blacks loose forward Dr. Keith Nelson has passed away at the age of 86. Nelson, who played for the All Blacks from 1962 to 1964, participated in 18 matches, including two test matches against Australia. He was recognized as All Black No. 631, a testament to his contributions to New Zealand rugby.
Legacy on and off the Field
After retiring from professional rugby, Nelson transitioned to a successful career in dentistry. He founded a dental practice, Keith Nelson & Associates, in Glen Eden, where he worked for more than 40 years. His commitment to both the sport and community was evident in his role as the official dentist for Eden Park, New Zealand’s premier sports venue, for over two decades.
Nelson was not just a spectator at matches; he was actively involved in the game. He provided dental care to players, hand-making mouthguards for both Auckland and All Blacks players. His dedication to ensuring the safety and health of athletes underscored his dual commitment to rugby and dentistry.
A Community Remembered
The news of Nelson’s death was confirmed via a post on social media from Keith Nelson & Associates on Thursday. The announcement resonated deeply within the rugby community, prompting a heartfelt statement from Auckland Rugby, which acknowledged his significant contributions to the sport and the lasting impact he made on those around him.
Throughout his life, Dr. Keith Nelson exemplified the spirit of sportsmanship and service, leaving a legacy that will be remembered both on the field and in the hearts of those he served. His passing marks the end of an era for many who admired his dedication to rugby and his profession.
