Kiwi Lulu Sun Triumphs in WTA 125 Tournament in China

New Zealand’s top tennis player, Lulu Sun, has marked a significant comeback by winning the WTA 125 tournament in Jingshan, China. Sun defeated local favourite Ma Ye-Xin with a convincing score of 6-4, 6-2 in the final, showcasing her resilience after a challenging period that saw her ranking drop to nearly 150 in the world.
The path to her victory included a notable semi-final match against rising star Alexandra Eala from the Philippines. Sun displayed remarkable tenacity, recovering from a set down to win the match 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. Eala, who is only 20 years old and currently ranked No. 58, has been highlighted as a promising newcomer on the women’s tour.
Financial Boost and Ranking Impact
With her triumph at the WTA 125 event, Sun earns not only 125 ranking points but also a prize of US$22,730, equivalent to approximately NZ$39,373. This victory is expected to elevate her ranking from 146 to around 125, providing a much-needed boost to her career.
Sun’s next competition will take place in Suzhou, China, the following week, where she hopes to build on her recent success. Additionally, she is confirmed to compete at the ASB Classic in Auckland in January 2024, where she will play in front of her home fans.
This latest achievement underlines Sun’s potential to regain her position among the top players in the world, as she continues to develop her game and gain valuable experience on the international stage.
