Silver Ferns Announce Squad for Constellation Cup Against Australia

A 14-player squad for the upcoming Constellation Cup series against Australia has been announced by the Silver Ferns. New Zealand aims to defend the prestigious title amidst recent coaching changes. The only alteration to the team previously named for the Taini Jamison series against South Africa is the inclusion of Amelia Walmsley, who impressed during the Netball World Youth Cup in Gibraltar, where the New Zealand U21 side secured second place. Walmsley replaces Filda Vui, who made her debut last month.
Several players, including Kate Burley, Tayla Earle, and Saviour Tui, were not selected for this series but may have opportunities in upcoming matches in the UK against Scotland and England next month.
Coaching Changes and Squad Dynamics
The announcement of the squad follows the decision that Dame Noeline Taurua, the Silver Ferns’ head coach, will be sidelined for the remainder of the 2023 season. This decision comes after unsuccessful mediation attempts last week. Yvette McCausland-Durie, who acted as interim coach during the Taini Jamison series, will continue in this role for the rest of the year. McCausland-Durie expressed excitement about the blend of seasoned players and emerging talent in the squad.
“The Constellation Cup is always a fiercely contested series, and we’ve selected a squad capable of rising to the challenge. We believe this group can push the Diamonds hard across all four Tests,” McCausland-Durie stated. She also emphasized the significance of Walmsley’s inclusion, noting her ability to perform under pressure on the global stage.
The Silver Ferns secured the Constellation Cup for only the third time last year, defeating the Australian Diamonds 3-1. In a change from previous strategies, the team utilized rotating captains during the recent South Africa series. An announcement regarding the captain and vice-captain will be made by the end of the training camp.
Training Camp and Match Schedule
The Silver Ferns are scheduled to gather for a training camp from October 7 to 11, 2023, before heading to Australia for the series opener. The first match will take place on October 17 at the John Cain Arena in Melbourne. Following this, the teams will compete at the Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney on October 22, before returning to New Zealand for matches at the Globox Arena in Hamilton on October 26 and the Wolfbrook Arena in Christchurch on October 29.
The Silver Ferns’ selection reflects a strong commitment to reclaiming the Constellation Cup title, and with a mix of experienced players and new talent, they are poised to make an impact in the upcoming series against Australia.
