Warriors Sign Haizyn Mellars on Three-Year Deal Ahead of 2028 Season

The New Zealand Warriors have secured promising winger Haizyn Mellars with a three-year contract that extends until the end of the 2028 NRL season. This move sees the 21-year-old returning to his roots after signing from the South Sydney Rabbitohs. Born in Auckland, Mellars is the son of former Warriors centre Vince Mellars, adding a compelling family narrative to his career.
Mellars, who stands at an impressive 1.93 meters, has yet to make his NRL debut due to hamstring injuries that sidelined him during the current season. Despite this setback, he demonstrated his potential with nine appearances for the Rabbitohs’ reserves, where he scored seven tries, including four in his last two games. This performance showcases the talent that the Warriors hope to harness as they build their squad for the upcoming seasons.
The signing of Haizyn Mellars carries historical significance. Should he debut for the Warriors in the next season, he would join his father as the first father-and-son duo to play for the club. The possibility is further intensified by the presence of Jett Cleary, whose father, Ivan Cleary, played for the Warriors between 2000 and 2002 and later took on the role of head coach. Jett is currently on a development contract for next season, aiming for an NRL deal in 2027.
Mellars’ return to New Zealand not only marks a personal homecoming but also aligns with the Warriors’ strategy to cultivate local talent. The club has expressed optimism about Mellars’ future contributions. Coach Andrew Webster highlighted the importance of nurturing players who have strong connections to the region, and Mellars fits this vision perfectly.
As the Warriors prepare for the 2024 season, the addition of Haizyn Mellars could prove pivotal. With a combination of familial legacy and raw talent, he represents a bright prospect for the team’s aspirations in the NRL. The Warriors and their supporters eagerly await his debut, which could further enrich the club’s history.
