Australia Clinches Chappell-Hadlee Trophy with Marsh’s Century

Australia secured a decisive victory over New Zealand in the third T20I, winning by three wickets and retaining the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy. The match, held at Bay Oval in Mt Maunganui on Saturday night, showcased the brilliance of Australian skipper Mitch Marsh, who scored an impressive unbeaten 103 runs off 52 balls.
New Zealand batted first, setting a target of 156-9 after a delayed start due to a wet outfield. Despite the challenging conditions, Tim Seifert led the way for the Black Caps with a solid 48 runs from 35 balls. Michael Bracewell and Jimmy Neesham contributed with 26 and 25 runs, respectively. However, the team struggled against a disciplined Australian bowling attack, with right-arm fast bowler Xavier Bartlett taking 2-25 and Josh Hazlewood claiming 2-26.
Marsh’s stellar performance was crucial in guiding Australia to a total of 160-7 in just 18 overs. His innings included seven sixes and eight fours, highlighting his dominant display at the crease. The next highest score from his teammates was just 14 runs from Mitchell Owen. Despite Neesham’s commendable effort with the ball, taking 4-26, New Zealand could not prevent the Australians from achieving their target.
The Black Caps faced challenges throughout the match, losing Devon Conway early in the first over due to a mis-timed shot. Their batting performance reflected a lack of fluency, with a significant portion of their deliveries ending as dot balls—over 51% of their total deliveries did not yield runs.
Coach Rob Walter attributed the series defeat partly to the absence of key players, including captain Mitchell Santner, opener Finn Allen, and all-rounder Glenn Phillips, all sidelined due to injuries. Although Australia also missed several first-choice players, their depth in talent was evident, particularly with Bartlett and Hazlewood leading the bowling attack.
The match also featured notable fielding moments, including a remarkable catch by Tim David to dismiss Mark Chapman, showcasing the athleticism on both sides.
Looking ahead, the Black Caps will continue their preparations for the 2026 World Cup with a series of three T20Is and three ODIs against England, set to begin in a fortnight. As they regroup, they will seek to address the weaknesses displayed in this series against Australia.
