Fishermen Retrieve Lost Phone from 400 Metres Underwater

A lost phone belonging to a young diver was successfully retrieved from a depth of 400 metres by local fishermen near Ross, New Zealand. The phone had gone overboard during a family fishing trip, but luck turned in their favour two weeks later when the trawlers spotted the device and contacted the owner.
Matt Butterfield, whose son lost the phone, expressed his disbelief and gratitude upon hearing the news. The fishermen not only discovered the phone but also recovered a bank card, driver’s licence, and student ID. Butterfield stated, “The guy’s already sent me a photo of the envelope. He’s sending it back. Pretty old-school hospitality.”
The Butterfield family had embarked on their first overnight fishing trip, targeting southern bluefin tuna in the remote Hokitika Trench. The incident occurred in the middle of the night when Butterfield’s son attempted to catch a floating fish that had been discarded by a trawler for bait. In the process, the phone slipped from his grasp and fell into the depths.
As of yesterday afternoon, the young diver was unaware of the fortunate turn of events. Engaged in commercial diving activities in the Wairarapa region, he had not been reachable on his new phone. Butterfield mentioned, “I was actually, ironically, just sorting out his bank card this morning for him.”
The family remains hopeful that the phone, which is relatively new and waterproof, can be revived. Butterfield noted, “We will not give up until we have tried to get it working again.” He is eager to connect with the fishermen upon their return to the West Coast, looking forward to sharing a drink in appreciation of their efforts.
This incident highlights not just the unexpected recovery of a lost item but also the spirit of community and camaraderie among those who share a passion for fishing.
