Young Mother Faces Stage 4 Cancer, Creates Lasting Memories
Briar Dawson, a 24-year-old mother from Clinton, New Zealand, received a devastating diagnosis in March 2023 when she learned she has stage 4 colon cancer. Initially seeking medical attention for suspected Crohn’s disease, an inflammatory bowel condition, a colonoscopy revealed a 15cm tumour in her colon that had metastasised to her lymph nodes, liver, and lungs. The diagnosis shocked Dawson, who expressed disbelief given her young age.
“It was quite a big shock especially because of my age,” Dawson said. “Bowel cancer or colon cancer seems to be more of an older person thing, but it seems to be getting a bit more popular in younger people now.”
Adding to her family’s challenges, Dawson’s mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in November 2022. Although her mother’s condition was less aggressive and she was cleared after surgery in January 2023, the emotional toll on the family has been significant.
Dawson’s oncologist has informed her that she may have only about two and a half years to live, prompting her to refocus her priorities. Spending quality time with her three-year-old daughter has become paramount.
“My mental health has declined a lot since the diagnosis,” she shared. “I struggle with anxiety, and my treatment is pretty full-on.” Despite the challenges, she is committed to making memories with her daughter, aiming to enjoy as many moments together as possible.
Recently, the pair visited the zoo in Christchurch and went bowling, activities Dawson describes as opportunities to capture cherished memories. “I’ve taken her on trips that we can take lots of photos on and enjoy the time together,” she said.
To support Dawson during this difficult time, her sister, Amy Seymour, has set up a Givealittle page. This initiative aims to raise funds to assist with Dawson’s chemotherapy and alleviate the financial burdens that lie ahead for her daughter.
As Dawson navigates the complexities of her illness, her focus remains on creating joyful experiences and bonding with her daughter. The journey ahead is undoubtedly challenging, but her resolve to prioritize family shines through.
