Auckland Central Fire Station Evacuated Over Asbestos Discovery

Auckland’s Central Fire Station has been evacuated following the discovery of asbestos within the building. Fire and Emergency New Zealand confirmed that positive results for asbestos were found in dust samples taken from the station located on Pitt Street. The organization announced the findings on October 3, 2025, expressing concern for the safety of its personnel.
Deputy National Commander Megan Stiffler stated, “Fire and Emergency New Zealand is disappointed to learn of the positive results for asbestos in dust samples at our Pitt Street Station in Auckland as a result of testing in July 2025. This is a result we were not expecting.”
The contamination was identified during routine testing conducted earlier this year. Stiffler emphasized that there is currently no evidence to suggest the asbestos has spread beyond the initial rooms where it was detected. The asbestos was reportedly removed from the fire station in September 2024, and subsequent assessments were intended to ensure the safety of the facility.
In light of these developments, Fire and Emergency New Zealand has taken immediate action to evacuate personnel from the site. The organization is working closely with health and safety experts to address the issue and ensure that all necessary precautions are taken to protect staff and the surrounding community.
Authorities have implemented a thorough investigation to determine the extent of the contamination and to ensure that appropriate measures are adopted for clean-up and remediation. The station’s operations will be temporarily suspended until safety can be guaranteed.
The discovery of asbestos in public buildings, especially those utilized by emergency services, raises significant public health concerns. Asbestos exposure is linked to serious health issues, including lung disease and cancer, and its presence necessitates urgent attention and action.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand has reassured the community that it is committed to resolving the situation swiftly and responsibly. Updates on the situation will be communicated to the public as new information becomes available.
As the investigation continues, the organization urges anyone with concerns about possible exposure to reach out to health professionals for guidance and support.
