Hu’akavameiliku Reflects on Future Amid Tongan Elections

Former Prime Minister of Tonga, Hu’akavameiliku Siaosi Sovaleni, has remained non-committal about his potential return to the prime ministerial role as the nation prepares for upcoming elections in November. During an interview with RNZ Pacific, Hu’akavameiliku was asked about his intentions following his resignation in December 2022, but he opted not to provide a definitive answer, stating, “One step at a time. I’m just focusing on the needs of my constituencies and the election, and then we’ll see what happens after.”
As Tonga’s Legislative Assembly wraps up its final session this week, several critical agenda items remain to be addressed before members disperse for the election period. Hu’akavameiliku emphasized the importance of finalizing legislative work and annual reports, highlighting the busy weeks that members of parliament (MPs) have experienced as they engage with their constituents.
The former prime minister represents the Tongatapu 3 constituency, where he noted that common concerns being raised by constituents include infrastructure issues such as roads and street lighting, security matters, drug-related challenges, and support for women’s groups and sports development. “These issues are pretty common across all constituencies,” he remarked, indicating a shared set of priorities among voters.
In December 2022, Hu’akavameiliku stepped down from his leadership position in anticipation of a no-confidence motion initiated by Dr ‘Aisake Eke, who subsequently took over as prime minister. While Dr Eke had made allegations against Hu’akavameiliku, he has not publicly elaborated on the specifics of those claims.
With the election timeline approaching, Hu’akavameiliku’s current focus remains on fulfilling the needs of his constituents. He expressed optimism about the work being accomplished in the assembly, stating, “Right now we’re trying to complete some of the agenda items, including legislations, annual reports and so forth.” As the political landscape evolves in Tonga, the former prime minister’s next steps remain uncertain, but his commitment to his constituents is clear.
