Jelly Roll Cancels Auckland Show Hours Before Performance
The highly anticipated concert by rapper and singer-songwriter Jelly Roll was abruptly cancelled just hours before it was set to begin on November 4, 2023, at The Outer Fields at Western Springs in Auckland. The artist announced the decision through a heartfelt message on his Instagram, expressing his deep regret and citing illness as the reason for his inability to perform.
In his post, Jelly Roll stated, “Dear Auckland I’ve done everything I can. I just can’t shake it. It breaks my heart; I’ve probably missed three shows in the last decade. I pride myself on showing up no matter what. Just couldn’t do it this time. Please forgive me.”
Shortly after his announcement, Live Nation confirmed the cancellation in a statement released around 18:20. They expressed their regret over the situation and assured fans that “all ticket holders will receive an automatic full refund.” The company encouraged anyone with further refund inquiries to contact their point of purchase and added, “We thank the fans for their understanding, and we look forward to welcoming Jelly Roll in future.”
Fans were left disappointed by the late notice of the cancellation. Angie Smith, a 44-year-old fan who had driven from Waikato with four friends, expressed her frustration. She spent $188 on petrol for the trip, saying, “I’m f…ed off, it’s annoying; they could have told us hours ago.” Smith was particularly looking forward to singing along to the track “Save Me.”
Another disappointed fan, Peter Wilson, 63, had flown in from Dunedin after attending a Metallica concert in Adelaide. He had planned to see Jelly Roll on his way back to the South Island. Reflecting on the sudden cancellation, Wilson remarked, “We’d been gearing up for this all day. I’m in a bit of shock.” He had previously seen Jelly Roll perform in Las Vegas.
Cindy Ramsey, who attended the concert with her son, was equally disheartened. The concert was a Father’s Day present from her 32-year-old son, Shane Thomas. Ramsey said she felt “gutted” by the last-minute cancellation and was particularly eager to sing “I Am Not OK,” a song that resonates deeply with both of them. Thomas shared, “That’s my song right now. That’s our family’s song right now.”
Both mother and son connect with Jelly Roll’s journey of redemption from a troubled past, and Thomas described how listening to Jelly Roll’s song “Sober” had inspired him to pursue sobriety. “I was on a bender when I heard the song. When I heard that, I actually started to get sober,” he noted.
The cancellation of Jelly Roll’s Auckland show underscores the unpredictability of live performances and the impact of health issues on artists and their fans. As ticket holders await refunds, the hope remains that Jelly Roll will return to New Zealand in the future to make up for this disappointing event.
