Injury-Stricken Magpies Fall to Taranaki, Face Playoff Pressure
The Hawke’s Bay Magpies suffered a significant setback in their quest for the National Provincial Championship (NPC) playoffs, losing to Taranaki 38-24 in New Plymouth on March 15, 2024. This defeat dropped the Magpies to fourth place in the competition ladder, intensifying their struggle to secure a favorable position ahead of the quarterfinals. With only two matches remaining in the regular season, the team now faces the possibility of slipping to sixth place, which would jeopardize their chances of hosting a playoff match.
The Magpies struck first in the match, with left wing Neria Fomai crossing the line to score in the 17th minute. Despite the promising start, first five-eighths Lincoln McClutchie was unable to convert, hitting the posts with his attempt. For the next 20 minutes, the Magpies’ defense held strong under pressure from Taranaki, but as the first half progressed, the tide began to turn.
In a critical moment, Magpies’ captain Tom Parsons received a yellow card, leaving his team vulnerable. This advantage allowed Taranaki to capitalize, with hooker Bradley Slater scoring a try through a forward drive from a lineout following a penalty. By halftime, the Magpies found themselves trailing 7-5, a situation that would complicate their strategy for the remainder of the match.
As the second half unfolded, Taranaki extended their lead, showcasing their depth and resilience. The Magpies struggled to regain momentum, with injuries further hampering their performance. Despite their efforts, they could not bridge the gap, ultimately conceding the match by a two-score margin.
The implications of this loss are profound for the Magpies. They now have two crucial games left in the season to secure their place in the playoffs and avoid the risk of being relegated to a lower seed. The pressure is mounting as they prepare to face their upcoming opponents, with their playoff aspirations hanging in the balance.
With the NPC celebrating its 50th year, the stakes could not be higher for the Magpies. Fans will be eagerly watching to see if the team can rally and secure a playoff position in the coming weeks.
