Magpies Fall to Taranaki, Risk Playoff Position in NPC

The Hawke’s Bay Magpies faced a significant setback in their quest for the National Provincial Championship (NPC) playoffs, suffering a 38-24 defeat to Taranaki in New Plymouth on March 15, 2024. This loss dropped the Magpies to fourth place in the competition standings, placing them at risk of falling as low as sixth by the end of the weekend. With only two matches remaining before the quarterfinals, their chances of securing a home match in the playoffs have been jeopardized.
The Magpies struck first during the match, with left wing Neria Fomai crossing the try line in the 17th minute. Despite this promising start, their first five-eighths, Lincoln McClutchie, failed to convert the try, hitting the posts instead. Following their initial lead, the Magpies struggled under sustained pressure from Taranaki, who gradually gained the upper hand.
As the first half progressed, the Magpies’ defense held firm until a crucial moment just before halftime. Captain Tom Parsons received a yellow card, leaving the team a man down. This proved pivotal as Taranaki hooker Bradley Slater capitalized on the opportunity, scoring from a forwards drive following a penalty lineout, bringing the halftime score to 7-5 in favor of Taranaki.
The second half saw the Magpies attempt to mount a comeback, but Taranaki’s relentless attack and solid defense thwarted their efforts. The loss not only impacts the Magpies’ current standings but also heightens the urgency for their upcoming matches. To maintain playoff hopes and improve their position, they must secure victories in their final two fixtures.
As the NPC enters its 50th year, the competition remains fierce, and the pressure will only intensify as teams vie for playoff spots. The Magpies must regroup and strategize quickly if they wish to keep their championship aspirations alive.
