Police Dog Handler Scott Higby Maintains Strong Bond with Chip

Officer Scott Higby, a dedicated police dog handler, continues to patrol the streets of Tauranga alongside his canine partner, Chip. Despite encountering multiple challenges in the line of duty, Higby expresses unwavering enthusiasm for his role, stating, “It’s the best job ever. I don’t think there’s a better one.”
Higby, who joined the police force nine years ago, has forged a strong bond with Chip since becoming a dog handler in 2021. His career began in the Hamilton police force, where he cultivated a passion for law enforcement, inspired by family members and friends who served in similar roles.
Family Influence and Career Path
As a second-generation police officer, Higby credits his uncle and a family friend for motivating him to pursue a career in policing. “I never knew what I’d want to do in the police, but I always did want to do it,” he explained. This desire led him to transfer to Tauranga, where he could take on the responsibilities of a dog handler.
Throughout his tenure, Higby has faced numerous challenges, including attacks while on duty. Yet, his commitment to his role and his partnership with Chip remains steadfast. “We have a good connection,” Higby remarked, highlighting the importance of trust and teamwork in their daily operations.
The Role of Police Dogs in Law Enforcement
Police dogs like Chip play a crucial role in law enforcement by assisting officers in various tasks, including search and rescue operations, drug detection, and apprehending suspects. These highly trained animals not only enhance police capabilities but also foster community trust and safety.
Higby’s passion for his work extends beyond the daily patrols. He actively participates in community outreach programs, demonstrating the positive impact police dogs can have in building relationships between law enforcement and the public. Through demonstrations and educational events, he aims to showcase Chip’s abilities while fostering understanding of the role that police dogs play in public safety.
As he continues his patrols with Chip, Higby remains optimistic about the future of policing in his community. His dedication to the job and his partnership with Chip exemplify the vital role that police officers and their canine companions play in ensuring safety and security in Tauranga and beyond.
