Police Investigate Fatal Car Attack in Bay of Plenty, New Zealand

A violent incident in Bay of Plenty, New Zealand, has resulted in one fatality and serious injuries. On March 16, 2024, emergency services responded to reports of a car attack at the intersection of Flax and Matatā Roads around 15:50 local time. A woman allegedly murdered one person and seriously injured another while inside a vehicle, which subsequently veered off the road and crashed.
Health New Zealand has confirmed its involvement in the case, stating that it is “supporting the police investigation.” The incident has drawn significant attention, prompting the office of the mental health minister to receive briefings regarding the situation.
The emergency response team arrived promptly at the scene. Sadly, one individual succumbed to their injuries and was pronounced dead at the site of the crash. The second victim sustained serious injuries but is currently reported to be in stable condition at a local hospital.
In connection with the attack, a 34-year-old woman has been charged with murder and wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. She appeared in the Whakatāne District Court on March 18, 2024, where Judge Stephen Coyle presided over the proceedings. The court has yet to set a date for her next appearance, as the investigation continues.
Authorities have not disclosed the identities of the victims or the accused at this stage. The police are appealing for any witnesses to the incident to come forward with information.
As the investigation unfolds, Health New Zealand’s support of the police inquiry highlights the serious nature of the attack. This incident not only affects the immediate victims but also raises broader concerns about community safety and mental health resources in the region.
