Severe weather warnings have been issued for the Wellington and Wairarapa regions as heavy rain and strong winds impact much of New Zealand today. According to MetService, both areas can expect Norwest winds that may reach severe gales. Additionally, warnings extend to the Canterbury high country and Tararua districts.

The Tararua Ranges are currently under an orange heavy rain warning, which will remain in effect until 20:00 local time. Forecasts indicate that these areas could receive between 150 mm and 200 mm of rain, with peak rainfall rates estimated at 20 mm to 30 mm per hour. This significant amount of rainfall follows prior precipitation, raising concerns about potential flooding and hazardous conditions.

Travel disruptions have already begun, notably on State Highway 53, which is closed southeast of Featherston, near Murphys Line, due to downed power lines. The NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi has advised motorists to allow extra time for travel through affected areas and to remain vigilant when navigating roads during these adverse weather conditions.

Residents in Wellington and Wairarapa are urged to stay updated on weather forecasts and to take necessary precautions to ensure their safety. As conditions evolve, local authorities will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as needed.
