China Donates NZ$100 Million to Vanuatu for Reconstruction Efforts
China has committed NZ$100 million to Vanuatu to aid in the renovation of public buildings damaged by a devastating earthquake last year. The funding, reported by the Vanuatu Daily Post, will facilitate the rebuilding of significant structures, including the parliament complex and the Prime Minister’s office. Additional facilities undergoing repairs include Korman Stadium, Malapoa College, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Chinese Ambassador Li Minggang emphasized that this grant underscores Beijing’s steadfast support for Vanuatu’s recovery following the earthquake that struck on December 17, 2022.
New Zealand’s Visa Initiatives for Pacific Nationals
In a related development, New Zealand’s Foreign Minister Winston Peters announced plans to collaborate with Samoa on establishing visa-free travel for Pacific nationals. Speaking on PMN’s Pacific Mornings, Peters highlighted the necessity of obtaining full support from the Samoan government for this initiative. This proposal follows a call from former MP Anae Arthur Anae for the New Zealand government to grant Pacific citizens a three-month visa upon arrival. Peters noted that delays in travel can hinder family connections, particularly in times of loss, stating, “If someone dies and they want to see this person before or after their death in New Zealand, these delays make it impossible.”
As part of a new 12-month trial, nationals from Pacific Islands Forum countries can now enter New Zealand from Australia without a visa, a move aimed at facilitating greater movement within the region.
Dengue Outbreak in Tuvalu and Drug Charges in Fiji
In Tuvalu, the health department reported 848 cases of dengue-like illness currently undergoing testing, with 238 cases confirmed as positive through rapid dengue testing. This update, covering the week ending November 2, indicates a decline in the number of cases since the outbreak was declared on June 5, 2023.
Meanwhile, law enforcement in Fiji has charged six men with two counts of unlawful importation of methamphetamine. The police allege that the six were involved in two consignments totaling over three kilograms, with the incidents occurring between March and July 2023. The accused are scheduled to appear in Nadi Magistrates Court on Monday.
Additionally, the United Arab Emirates has announced plans to open an embassy in Fiji. This development was confirmed by UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed during a meeting with Fiji’s President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu in Abu Dhabi. Diplomatic relations between Fiji and the UAE were established in March 2010.
Palau’s Disaster Preparedness Initiatives
In Palau, the government has initiated construction on a new warehouse designated for disaster supplies. The Pacific Community (SPC) stated that the facility will be managed by the National Emergency Management Office and will store critical items such as shelter kits, hygiene products, and solar lights. Vice President Raynold Oilouch remarked that this warehouse is part of an ongoing effort to ensure that disaster response teams are well-equipped and do not have to wait for supplies to arrive from abroad.
Collectively, these developments across the Pacific highlight ongoing efforts towards recovery, regional cooperation, and disaster preparedness in the face of natural and economic challenges.
