Central Hawke’s Bay Show Thrills with Animals and Competitions
The Central Hawke’s Bay A&P Show concluded on March 16, 2024, in Waipukurau, New Zealand, drawing large crowds despite the sweltering heat. This two-day event showcased a variety of animals, predominantly horses, sheep, and dogs, while also featuring several competitive events that highlighted local talent and agricultural practices.
Attendees enjoyed a range of activities, including terrier racing, biscuit catching, and the bark-up competition, where less cooperative dogs had their handlers step in as stand-ins. The show also hosted sheepdog trials, which demonstrated the impressive skills of both handlers and their canine companions.
In addition to dog events, the show featured two busy arenas where horses paraded and jumped. Over 130 shearers and wool handlers participated in various shearing competitions, making a significant impact on this year’s event. Among them, renowned shearer and former world champion John Kirkpatrick achieved a remarkable feat by winning the Open shearing title for the fifteenth time, further establishing his legacy in the shearing community.
The show also highlighted agricultural machinery, with a display featuring both vintage tractors and the latest models from 2025. This combination of history and innovation attracted many enthusiasts and industry professionals alike.
The Central Hawke’s Bay A&P Show not only celebrates rural life but also serves as a platform for local talent to shine. With its diverse range of activities and competitions, the event continues to be a staple in the community and a showcase of New Zealand’s agricultural heritage.
