Patients in Rodney can now receive laser therapy for varicose veins and other vascular conditions without the need to travel to Auckland. Coast to Coast Health Care in Warkworth has been providing a range of laser vein treatment options for the past few years, led by vascular specialist Dr. Mark Denekamp. This in-house service has gained popularity, particularly since its official launch in 2021 following delays due to COVID-19 lockdowns.

Dr. Denekamp brings nearly three decades of experience in non-surgical treatments for varicose veins, having started this work in 1997. He explained, “It’s a relatively new service for Coast to Coast Health Care, but I’ve been treating varicose veins non-surgically since 1997. I’ve got a variety of lasers, so I can also treat face veins and other vascular issues, including venous lakes on the lips.”

Access to laser therapy within the public health system is often limited to severe cases of varicose veins. For insurance coverage, treatments typically need to address medical problems such as pain, swelling, or skin changes, rather than purely cosmetic concerns. “Symptoms like pain, swelling, skin changes, ulceration rather than purely cosmetic removal of superficial veins are what qualifies for coverage,” Dr. Denekamp stated.

The consequences of untreated varicose veins can range from mild cosmetic concerns to serious medical issues, depending on the severity and individual health factors. To treat larger veins deep within the legs, Dr. Denekamp utilizes the VenaCure 1470 laser. This technique involves inserting a laser fibre into the affected vein through a small puncture, allowing laser energy to close off the vein.

“Once closed, the blood that normally flowed through that vein is rerouted to healthier veins nearby. Over time, the treated vein is absorbed by the body and disappears,” he noted. This minimally invasive procedure is performed under local anaesthesia and typically guided by ultrasound. It offers several advantages, including minimal scarring and a faster recovery compared to traditional vein stripping surgery.

“With lasers, you’re not cutting the skin; you’re actually just doing it inside, so it’s safer and more effective than the old surgical method,” Dr. Denekamp added.

For smaller varicose veins and spider veins, he offers sclerotherapy, which involves injecting a solution directly into the affected vein, causing it to collapse and eventually fade into scar tissue.

Individuals considering laser therapy are encouraged to schedule an initial consultation. “We can diagnose what you’ve got and then recommend a treatment. The results speak for themselves,” Dr. Denekamp explained. “It not only alleviates symptoms but also significantly improves appearance.”

The availability of these advanced treatments at Coast to Coast Health Care provides a valuable option for patients in the region, enhancing access to necessary medical care without the burden of travel.
