Al Ahli Saudi Secures Thrilling 2-1 Victory Over Al Sadd in ACL Elite
In a gripping encounter at the Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium, defending champions Al Ahli Saudi FC triumphed over Al Sadd SC with a score of 2-1 in their AFC Champions League (ACL) Elite clash on October 17, 2023. The match showcased a fierce competition as Al Ahli successfully held off a determined fightback from Al Sadd.
Algerian international Riyad Mahrez opened the scoring for Al Ahli in the first half, a strike that set the tone for the match. However, Al Sadd equalized with a second-half goal from Claudinho, who capitalized on a well-crafted assist. Shortly thereafter, Matheus Goncalves delivered the decisive blow for Al Ahli, marking the team’s third victory in the tournament this season.
Al Sadd Struggles to Capitalize on Early Dominance
Despite the loss, Al Sadd’s performance received praise from head coach Sergio Allegri, who emphasized that his players deserved a better outcome. “We played a good match against a strong team, but luck was not on our side,” he remarked post-match. Allegri highlighted the team’s effort, stating, “We created several chances and did everything we could. The team has developed and there is still hope in this competition.”
Al Sadd dominated early in the match, with attempts from Rafa Mujica and Akram Afif testing the Al Ahli defense. Al Ahli’s goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy, played a crucial role, making several key saves to deny Al Sadd any early advantage. Mendy’s reflexes were evident when he blocked a close-range effort from Mujica in the seventh minute and later thwarted Afif’s long-range shot.
Al Ahli struck first when Mahrez netted in the 34th minute, tapping in from the center of the box after a well-placed opportunity by Enzo Millot. As the first half approached its conclusion, Al Sadd pushed for an equalizer, with Claudinho missing a chance and Mujica hitting the crossbar during stoppage time.
Decisive Moments Define the Match
The second half brought renewed hope for Al Sadd, as they found their equalizer in the 63rd minute. Afif set up Claudinho perfectly, allowing him to score with a precise shot into the top-right corner. The celebration was short-lived, as just five minutes later, Al Ahli responded through Goncalves, who struck from a tight angle, putting his team back in front.
With this victory, Al Ahli Saudi FC has climbed to second place in the group standings, extending their unbeaten streak to 22 matches in the continental tournament. Meanwhile, Al Sadd’s position has deteriorated, now sitting in 10th with two losses and two draws.
The match highlighted the competitive spirit of both teams, reflecting the high stakes of the ACL Elite. As Al Ahli continues their pursuit of another championship, Al Sadd remains determined to turn their fortunes around in the upcoming fixtures.
