Government Proposes Major Event Increases at Eden Park

The New Zealand government has announced plans to significantly increase the number of events permitted at Eden Park, aiming to boost Auckland’s economy and preserve jobs. According to a report by RMA Reform Minister Chris Bishop, current regulations are hindering economic growth, potentially costing the city up to $432 million in lost income and resulting in the loss of 751 jobs over the next decade.

Bishop emphasized the importance of Eden Park as a key asset for both Auckland and New Zealand. He stated, “Restrictive local planning rules are stifling Eden Park’s ability to drive economic growth and create jobs.” The proposed changes would allow for an increase in large concerts to 12 per year, as well as 20 medium-sized events. Additionally, the reforms would introduce more flexibility regarding the timing, duration, and types of activities hosted at the venue.

Proposed Changes and Economic Impact

The report suggests lifting current limitations that restrict Eden Park to a total of 12 concerts annually, capping event sizes at 2,000 attendees, and placing constraints on nighttime sporting events, particularly on Sundays. Bishop pointed out that these restrictions were initially put in place to address community concerns regarding noise and traffic. However, he advocates for reassessing these regulations to better support Auckland’s event and tourism sectors.

In support of his argument, Bishop highlighted the economic benefits of concerts, noting that 14 major shows over the past three years injected $33.7 million into the local economy. The proposed adjustments would also facilitate more community, cultural, and trade events, while eliminating size limits for conferences and large functions.

Public Consultation Open Until November 19

The government is currently seeking public input on these proposed changes. A consultation period is open until November 19, 2023, and stakeholders can provide their feedback through the Environment Ministry’s online consultation hub. This engagement aims to ensure that community voices are heard as the government considers reforms that could reshape the future of Eden Park and its role in Auckland’s economic landscape.
