Garmin has officially unveiled the Fenix 8 Pro, introducing a smartwatch that features innovative MicroLED technology and LTE connectivity. This launch comes just days before the anticipated release of the Apple Watch Ultra 3, adding a competitive edge to Garmin’s offerings in the premium smartwatch market.

The new Fenix 8 Pro series includes two high-end models that expand upon the existing Fenix 8 line. Both versions provide on-wrist satellite communication through Garmin’s InReach service, enhancing their utility for outdoor enthusiasts. The standout feature is the MicroLED screen, which Garmin claims is “the brightest smartwatch screen ever.” This display, which consists of more than 400,000 LEDs, promises vibrant colors, high pixel density, and excellent visibility even in direct sunlight, a crucial attribute for outdoor use.

Features and Pricing of the Fenix 8 Pro

Only the larger 51mm version of the Fenix 8 Pro will feature the MicroLED technology, while the smaller 47mm model retains a standard AMOLED screen. Both models incorporate new communications features, including LTE connectivity that allows users to send text messages and perform location check-ins via Garmin Messenger. To receive messages, recipients must also have the Garmin Messenger app installed on their devices.

In addition to text messaging, the LTE functionality enables voice calls to other Garmin Messenger users. Voice messages can also be sent to other Garmin watches, with the system automatically transcribing them for convenience. Garmin’s LiveTrack feature, which provides real-time tracking, and access to relevant weather updates are also enhanced through LTE connectivity.

Pricing for the Fenix 8 Pro models starts at £1,029.99 in the UK (approximately $1,400 / AU$2,110), while the premium 51mm MicroLED version is priced at £1,729.99 (about $2,320 / AU$3,550). Garmin has yet to release specific pricing details for the US and Australia, but updates will follow shortly.

Strategic Timing Ahead of Apple’s Reveal

The timing of Garmin’s launch is notable, coinciding closely with speculation surrounding the Apple Watch Ultra 3. Reports had suggested that Apple might incorporate MicroLED technology into its upcoming device, though some sources indicate that this development may have been postponed. By introducing the Fenix 8 Pro first, Garmin strengthens its position in the market as a leader in smartwatch innovation.

This move reflects Garmin’s strategy to cater to consumers looking for advanced features in outdoor and fitness wearables. The Fenix 8 Pro series reinforces Garmin’s commitment to equipping users with cutting-edge technology that enhances their experiences during outdoor activities.

As the smartwatch market continues to evolve, Garmin’s latest offerings will likely attract attention from adventure enthusiasts and tech-savvy consumers alike. With its combination of rugged design and advanced communication capabilities, the Fenix 8 Pro positions itself as a formidable competitor in a rapidly changing landscape.
