Health New Zealand Seeks Land in Drury for New Hospital
Health New Zealand has initiated the search for suitable land in Drury to establish a new public hospital that aims to serve the rapidly expanding southern communities of Auckland. Health Minister and MP for Pakuranga, Simeon Brown, announced this significant development, stating that the call for expressions of interest from landowners marks a crucial step towards enhancing health infrastructure in the region.
This initiative comes in response to mounting pressures on existing hospitals, particularly Middlemore Hospital and Auckland City Hospital, which are increasingly struggling to accommodate the rising demand for healthcare services. The establishment of a new facility in Drury is expected to alleviate some of this strain.
New Facility to Address Healthcare Needs
According to Simeon Brown, the proposed hospital will include additional beds, modern operating theatres, and expanded emergency services. These enhancements are designed to improve access to timely and quality healthcare for the residents of South Auckland, a community identified as facing significant health challenges.
“A new hospital in the south will help ensure Kiwis get timely, quality healthcare,” Brown stated.
The site selected for the new hospital will need to provide convenient access to major transport routes, particularly State Highway 1 and Waihoehoe Road, facilitating easier visits for patients, staff, and visitors. This accessibility is a key consideration in the planning stages of the project.
Timeline for Land Acquisition
The request for information process, managed by Health New Zealand, will remain open until November 6, 2023. This timeline allows landowners the opportunity to submit proposals for suitable sites that meet the requirements set forth by the government.
As Auckland’s population continues to grow, the demand for healthcare services is projected to increase. The government’s commitment to expanding the health infrastructure in the region reflects a proactive approach to ensuring that residents receive adequate medical care. The new hospital in Drury is positioned to play a vital role in meeting these healthcare demands as the community evolves.
With the focus on securing a suitable location, the government aims to move forward swiftly with the project, contributing to the overall improvement of health services in Auckland’s southern suburbs.
