A local man with a chronic lung condition received timely medical assistance thanks to the intervention of an Extended Care Paramedic (ECP) after experiencing severe flu symptoms. The paramedic, Katy Morgan, from the East Health Trust, provided essential care that included a full check-up, an inhaler, and antibiotics, resulting in immediate relief for the patient.
This incident highlights the crucial role of ECPs in the healthcare system, particularly in emergency situations. The patient, who had encountered similar respiratory issues three times in the past six months, was advised by Morgan to pursue further tests and a referral to a respiratory physiotherapist. Roles and Responsibilities of Extended Care Paramedics
Extended Care Paramedics represent a relatively new addition to general practice, enhancing the capabilities of traditional healthcare teams. ECPs, like Morgan, come from backgrounds in emergency care and undergo rigorous training, completing university programs and gaining frontline experience in ambulance services. This foundation allows them to transition into primary care effectively.
The skill set of ECPs includes advanced clinical assessments, management of medical emergencies such as cardiac chest pain, severe asthma, and anaphylaxis.
