Ngira Simmonds Questions Leadership at Te Pāti Māori AGM
Ngira Simmonds, a former spokesperson for the Kiingitanga, openly challenged the leadership of Te Pāti Māori during their annual general meeting (AGM) held on October 15, 2023 at Waiatuhi marae in Rotorua. His remarks questioned whether current leaders possess the capability to unify the party effectively.
Simmonds metaphorically referred to Parliament as the “house of lions,” raising doubts about who the true leader is within the party. This critique seemed to target specific members, emphasizing a need for stronger leadership within Te Pāti Māori. The meeting, which attracted approximately 200 attendees, reflected a more streamlined agenda compared to previous years, focusing on crucial issues facing the party.
In response to Simmonds’ challenge, co-leader Rawiri Waititi reminded the audience that the primary adversary is the government, not fellow party members. His statement aimed to redirect the focus towards the larger political landscape and unite party members against common challenges.
The gathering at Waiatuhi marae concluded with a traditional pōwhiri, celebrating the cultural significance of the event. Despite the internal disagreements highlighted by Simmonds, the AGM served as an important platform for discussing the future direction of Te Pāti Māori and addressing concerns about leadership effectiveness.
As the party moves forward, it remains to be seen how these internal dynamics will influence its strategy and unity in the face of external political pressures.
