Qatar National Chess Team Competes in Fujairah Championship

The Qatari national chess team has officially entered the inaugural Fujairah World Chess Championship, which is currently taking place in Abu Dhabi and will run until September 2, 2023. This significant tournament has attracted nearly 600 players from 75 countries, competing across three distinct categories.
Championship Structure and Prize Pool
The championship features a competitive structure that includes the Superstar category for players rated 2560 and above, showcasing 44 elite international players. The Masters Championship is aimed at players rated above 2200, with around 330 participants. Additionally, the Open Championship welcomes players rated below 2200. A total prize pool of $125,000 will be awarded to the top performers across these categories.
Qatar’s representation includes notable players such as Grandmaster Hussein Aziz, alongside teammates Khaled Al-Jumaat, Hamad Al-Kuwari, Turki Al-Kuwari, Fahad Al-Mansouri, Ibrahim Al-Janahi, Saif Ahmed, Layan Al-Qassabi, and Rawda Al-Qassabi.
International Fair Play Arbitration Course
In addition to the competitions, Qatari international referee Sarah Al Mohannadi is participating in the International Fair Play Arbitration Course, which is being held alongside the tournament from August 28 to 31.
Mohammed Al Mudahka, President of the Qatar Chess Association, expressed optimism regarding the team’s prospects. He acknowledged the high caliber of the tournament, noting that many competitors are ranked among the world’s top 100 players. Al Mudahka highlighted the team’s preparation and the event’s significant international presence.
He also praised the Fujairah Chess Club for its exceptional organization and confirmed that matches are being streamed live on the FIDE website and other major platforms. Al Mudahka extended his gratitude to Dr. Abdullah Al Barakat, Chairman of the Fujairah Chess Club, for successfully hosting this prestigious event.
