Community Invited to Volunteer for Bookarama and Local Events

Local residents in east Auckland are encouraged to participate in several community events from August 30 to September 12, focusing on volunteer opportunities and public meetings. The most prominent event is the annual Bookarama charity book sale, which is organized by the Rotary Club of Howick. Scheduled for October 1-5, 2023, at Howick College, the event aims to raise funds for numerous local charitable initiatives. Volunteers are needed to assist with the collection and sorting of donated books, puzzles, games, DVDs, CDs, and LPs. Interested individuals can sign up by visiting www.bookarama.co.nz and selecting the “volunteers” tab.
Community Meetings and Sales
Members of the community will have the chance to attend a Zonta East Auckland meeting on September 2, 2023, at the Howick Club. The featured guest speaker, Denise Astill, is a recipient of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her advocacy work in preventing foetal anticonvulsant syndrome. Attendees can expect to hear about her experiences and dedication to this important cause. For more details, contact Gay at 021 145 1574.
Additionally, a Barn Sale will take place at 474 Pakuranga Road on September 6, 2023, starting at 08:00. This event offers an opportunity for families to find unique items for Father’s Day and prepare for the upcoming summer season. Shoppers can browse a wide variety of goods and enjoy the chance to snag some bargains.
Memories of Cockle Bay School and Local Elections
Cockle Bay School is seeking contributions from those connected to the institution. The school invites east Auckland residents—former students, teachers, parents, and community members—to share memories, photographs, and memorabilia. Items of particular interest include old class photos, school event programmes, newspaper clippings, and personal anecdotes that reflect the school’s history. Contributions can be sent to Sandra Meyer at [email protected].
In preparation for the upcoming local elections, two public meetings will provide voters with the opportunity to meet candidates. The first meeting is organized by the Howick Ratepayers and Residents Association and will feature candidates vying for the Auckland mayoralty and council positions in the Howick ward. This event is scheduled for August 30, 2023, at 13:30 at the Howick Bowling Club, located at 33 Selwyn Road.
The second meeting, hosted by the Korean Positive Ageing Charitable Trust, will take place on September 12, 2023, from 13:30 to 15:00 at St. Paul’s in the Park auditorium, 141 Chapel Road, Flat Bush. This event will focus on candidates running for election to the Howick Local Board.
These upcoming events and opportunities for community involvement highlight the vibrant spirit of east Auckland and underscore the importance of local engagement in charitable and civic initiatives.
