David Dimbleby Critiques Monarchy’s Relevance and Wealth
David Dimbleby has raised significant questions about the British monarchy’s relevance and financial practices, particularly in light of King Charles III’s considerable wealth. In a recent interview, the veteran broadcaster described it as a “terrible misfortune” to be born into the royal family and suggested that the institution must adapt to modern expectations. Dimbleby, who has spent decades covering royal events for the BBC, expressed concern over the monarchy’s role in the 21st century and the public’s perception of its financial dealings.
In a discussion ahead of his three-part BBC1 series, What’s the Monarchy For?, Dimbleby reflected on the challenges facing the royal family. He noted that Prince George, as the next in line, will encounter even greater difficulties in maintaining the monarchy’s relevance. He commended the decision of Prince Harry, now the Duke of Sussex, to relocate to California, stating, “Anyone in their right mind would leave if they could.”
Dimbleby, now 87, maintains a lively presence and is known for his extensive career as a broadcaster. He has been part of the BBC since the age of 12 and has anchored ten general elections and presented Question Time for 25 years. His recent return to the spotlight, prompted by the transition from Queen Elizabeth II to Charles, led him to conduct an “audit of the monarchy.” He questions whether the royal institution remains “fit for purpose” in contemporary society.
The second episode of Dimbleby’s series will delve into the royal family’s financial empire, primarily sourced from the duchies of Cornwall and Lancaster. He highlighted that while previous monarchs have paid income tax, Charles, described as the first billionaire king, does not pay capital gains tax or corporation tax on the duchies. “Why don’t they pay capital gains tax or corporation tax?” he challenged, referencing the King’s estimated personal net worth of £640 million.
Dimbleby also commented on the monarchy’s handling of crises, particularly the fallout from Prince Andrew’s association with Jeffrey Epstein. He characterized the situation as a “disaster” and criticized the royal family’s slow response. Notably, he pointed to the late Queen’s decision to accompany Andrew to a memorial service as a significant moment, raising questions about her motivations.
The broadcaster emphasized the need for transparency within the royal family, especially in light of recent revelations regarding Prince Edward‘s very low rent for Bagshot Park, a royal residence. “Their secrecy about things that seem to be unacceptable privileges is damaging,” he stated.
Dimbleby also shared insights on the relationship between the monarchy and the BBC, describing the network as the “royal ringmaster.” He expressed his disinterest in the repetitive royal events, noting his decision to stop covering the Trooping the Colour after growing bored with the pageantry.
As the BBC grapples with its own challenges, including recent resignations over editorial controversies, Dimbleby offered advice for the organization. He believes the BBC needs “firmness of purpose” and should focus on maintaining its integrity amid ongoing criticism. He also expressed a desire for the World Service to be fully funded by the UK government again, highlighting past funding decisions that favored the royal family.
In conclusion, Dimbleby’s reflections on the monarchy and the BBC reveal a complex landscape where tradition must confront modern expectations. His upcoming series promises to provide deeper insights into the royal family’s wealth and the institution’s place in contemporary British life.
