Council Votes Unanimously to Rename Prince Andrew Way

The council in the Mid and East Antrim area of Northern Ireland has unanimously decided to pursue the renaming of Prince Andrew Way in Carrickfergus. This decision follows the recent actions of King Charles III, who stripped his younger brother, Prince Andrew, of his royal title and evicted him from his residence. The king’s move aimed to mitigate damage to the royal family’s reputation linked to Andrew’s ties with the late sex offender, Jeffrey Epstein.

In a council meeting held last week, local representatives expressed their concerns over continuing to honor Prince Andrew. Anna Henry, a councillor with the Traditional Unionist Voice party, remarked, “This is a sad but necessary motion. Regrettably, the alleged actions of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor have made it impossible for this council to continue honouring him in the manner the good people of Mid and East Antrim have done in the past.”

The motion was introduced by Lauren Gray, a councillor from the Alliance Party, who suggested renaming the street in tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II. The council members agreed that such a change would reflect a more appropriate acknowledgment of the community’s values.

As part of the renaming process, council staff will engage with local residents to discuss potential new names. They will also coordinate with statutory bodies, including the postal service and the royal household, to ensure a smooth transition. Additionally, the council plans to assess whether they can cover any related costs for the ten addresses affected by the change.

Prince Andrew, aged 65, has faced increasing scrutiny over his conduct and his associations with Epstein in recent years. In light of these controversies, he was compelled to cease using his title of Duke of York last month. The council’s action in Carrickfergus reflects a broader sentiment across the UK, where residents in various locales have called for the renaming of streets dedicated to Andrew, signaling a shift in public perception regarding his legacy.
