New Zealand Forecasts Major Surge in Passport Renewals
New Zealand is bracing for a significant increase in passport renewal applications over the next two years, as many passports issued during the transition from five-year to ten-year validity approach their expiry dates. Minister of Internal Affairs Brooke van Velden announced that this surge is primarily due to the anniversary of the change implemented in late 2015.
In November 2015, New Zealand extended the validity of its passports from five years to ten years. As a result, passports renewed in 2015 and 2016 are now nearing their expiration. According to van Velden, the Department of Internal Affairs is expecting more than 1.3 million passports to expire within the next two years.
Projected Demand for Renewals
The department forecasts approximately 622,000 passport applications in 2026, followed by an additional 759,000 passports set to expire in 2027. “If your passport needs renewing soon, so will hundreds of thousands of others,” van Velden stated, urging New Zealanders to check their passport expiry dates.
She emphasized the importance of timely renewals to avoid potential delays during peak demand. “I encourage New Zealanders to make sure their passport is up to date before they need it,” she added.
Improvements in Processing Times
The Department of Internal Affairs has taken steps to enhance the efficiency of passport processing. Processing times have been significantly reduced, dropping from 25 days in 2023 to just three days for all applications, including non-urgent renewals. “New Zealanders rightly expect excellent service, and I’m proud that our passport team has delivered exactly that,” stated van Velden.
This improvement is expected to benefit families planning to travel internationally. The Minister advised anyone with a passport expiring in 2026 to renew early to avoid the rush. “Don’t let an expired passport get in the way of your travel,” she warned.
Most applicants can renew their passports online using the fast and secure digital application process available at www.passport.govt.nz. As the demand for passport renewals rises, the department is determined to provide efficient service to meet the needs of New Zealanders.
