Political Leaders Host Festive Office Parties Amid Holiday Cheer
New Zealand’s political leaders recently celebrated the festive season with a series of office parties that showcased their personalities and party dynamics. These gatherings, held in various locations, revealed a mix of camaraderie, competition, and a touch of chaos among the nation’s politicians.
Luxon’s National Party Gathering
Christopher Luxon hosted the National Party’s Christmas party at his residence, aiming to create a positive atmosphere focused on future achievements. The evening started on a light note, with Luxon ensuring an ample supply of cheese and crackers. However, the mood shifted when Mark Mitchell pointed out a lack of beverages, leading to an unexpected moment of discomfort among guests.
“The invite said BYO,” Luxon explained, noting that many attendees seemed unaware of this detail. As the cabinet members stood awkwardly around the room, Luxon offered the remaining snacks. “Help yourselves to cheese and crackers,” he said, only to be informed by Nicola Wills that they had already run out. The humorous yet tense atmosphere culminated in a playful challenge, where attendees were asked to choose sides regarding the mystery of the missing snacks, but ultimately, no one engaged. Recognizing the need for a fresh start, the gathering ended early.
Hipkins and the Labour Party
Meanwhile, Chris Hipkins hosted the Labour Party’s Christmas gathering at his home. The event was marked by a low turnout, as many members were occupied with constituency work. Only one MP, Kieran McAnulty, was present to enjoy the festivities.
“Help yourself,” Hipkins encouraged, as McAnulty poured himself a drink and settled down with a plate of snacks. Despite the light-hearted atmosphere, Hipkins faced a minor dilemma when crumbs from the crackers scattered across the floor. He swiftly addressed the issue with a hand-held vacuum cleaner, demonstrating his commitment to keeping a tidy space. Following McAnulty’s early departure, Hipkins turned his attention to cleaning up the wine stain left on the table.
Other Political Parties Join the Festivities
The Green Party’s Christmas celebration, hosted by Chloë Swarbrick, took a turn when guest Benjamin Doyle expressed discontent over the use of the term “crackers,” citing its potential offense to the rainbow community. Despite the awkward exchange, Swarbrick maintained a positive outlook on the evening.
In contrast, David Seymour of the ACT Party faced challenges with catering at his party, which was marred by unsatisfactory food from a school lunch provider. Despite the setback, he noted that the party itself was enjoyable, although it was tainted by reports of a giardia outbreak linked to the catering.
On a more solitary note, Rawiri Waititi of Te Pāti Māori hosted a party at his castle in the mountains, where he found himself alone. With no guests, food, or drink, he relished the quietude, reflecting on the essence of leadership and community.
Conversely, Winston Peters of New Zealand First enjoyed a lively celebration at his home, where guests indulged in food and drink, dancing the night away. His party stood in stark contrast to the quieter gatherings of his political counterparts, embodying a spirit of togetherness and festivity.
These Christmas celebrations provided a unique glimpse into the personal lives of New Zealand’s political leaders, highlighting the human side of governance during a season typically reserved for joy and connection.
