Christchurch Crowned Most Bicycle-Friendly City in Asia/Oceania
Christchurch has been named the most bicycle-friendly city in the Asia/Oceania region, according to the latest Copenhagenize Index, which evaluates cities based on their cycling infrastructure and policies. This prestigious ranking recognizes Christchurch’s commitment to making cycling safer and more accessible for residents, placing the city 38th globally.
The Copenhagenize Index, published biennially, utilizes evidence-based benchmarks to assess how cities worldwide are enhancing the cycling experience. Following Christchurch in the Asia/Oceania rankings are Taipei in second place, Wellington in third, Fukuoka in fourth, and Seoul in fifth.
Jacob Bradbury, the planning and delivery transport manager for Christchurch City Council, expressed pride in this recognition. He stated that the ranking reflects the extensive efforts made to create a cyclist-friendly environment. “We are pleased to see the investment that has been made in building cycleways and education in recent years is paying off,” he noted.
Recent statistics underscore this progress. Over the past eight years, cycling throughout Christchurch has increased by more than 40%. Additionally, the perception of Christchurch as a bicycle-friendly city has significantly improved. A decade ago, only 38% of residents believed the city was accommodating to cyclists; this figure is projected to rise to 67% by 2025.
The rise in cycling enthusiasm is particularly notable among women. Data indicates that female cyclists accounted for 41% of all cycling in the inner city in 2025, up from 33% just eight years prior. This trend aligns with findings from the 2024 national Quality of Life survey, where Christchurch was rated highest for perceived safety in its local bike network compared to New Zealand’s other major cities.
Bradbury highlighted the importance of fostering a cycling culture among young residents. The city’s Cycle Safe Programme, which teaches cycling skills in schools, is recognized as one of the best in the nation. Through this initiative, students learn the benefits of cycling and how to navigate the roads confidently.
Looking ahead, Christchurch continues to invest in its Major Cycleway network, with plans for further development set to commence in early 2026. “This investment will help our usage figures continue to grow, cementing our place as a bicycle-friendly city locally, nationally, and internationally,” Bradbury added.
Wellington is the only other New Zealand city featured in the Copenhagenize Index, ranking third in Asia and Oceania and 47th globally. The Copenhagenize Index highlights a global commitment to enhancing cycling infrastructure, with notable rankings from various regions, including Montréal in North America and Utrecht in Europe, which secured the top spots in their respective categories.
As cities worldwide strive to promote sustainable transportation, Christchurch’s recognition marks a significant achievement in its ongoing efforts to embrace cycling as a primary mode of transport.
