Celebrated Scientist Gordon Lauder Remembered for Global Impact
Gordon Lauder, a distinguished scientist known for his extensive research in atmospheric and geophysical sciences, passed away on November 6, 2025, just shy of his 95th birthday. His pioneering work spanned the globe, from the Arctic to the Antarctic. Lauder’s investigations significantly advanced the understanding of the Earth’s crust and atmosphere, utilizing techniques that measured anomalies in radioactivity, gravity fields, and the Earth’s magnetic field.
Lauder began his academic journey at Mt Albert Grammar and later attended the University of Auckland. His career took off with a focus on mineral prospecting and atmospheric research, including critical studies on how solar activity influenced the Earth’s ionosphere and magnetic field. His early work in the tropics—covering locations such as Brisbane, Darwin, Rarotonga, and Samoa—set the stage for his later contributions to Antarctic research.
Decades of Research and Recognition
In 1963, Lauder joined the DSIR Auroral Station in Lauder, which at the time consisted of simple wooden huts. His research in Antarctica began in 1967, focusing on the interaction between solar radiation and the atmosphere, a topic that gained prominence with the later discovery of the ozone hole. His findings contributed to essential navigation and communication technologies during that period.
Lauder’s contributions to Antarctic research earned him notable recognition. In 1994, he was invited to discuss New Zealand’s atmospheric research contributions with Prince Charles at the Antarctic Centre in Christchurch. He was awarded the Royal Society of New Zealand’s Science and Technology Silver Medal in 1995 and, in 2001, the New Zealand Geographical Board named Keys Hill near Scott Base in his honor.
In addition to his scientific accolades, Lauder served as president of the New Zealand Institute of Physics in the mid-1980s and earned a Master of Science in physics with distinction from the University of Otago in 1993. His career at Lauder spanned over 35 years, with more than half of that time spent in leadership roles.
Legacy Beyond Science
Lauder’s impact extended beyond his scientific achievements. He authored the book Stranded in Paradise, published in 2016, where he recounted his adventures in Rarotonga, including the salvage of propeller blades from the wreck of the RMS Maitai. His personal life was equally rich; he and his wife, Rima, who passed away three years prior, shared a life filled with music and community involvement. The couple built their own home in Rarotonga, where they hosted numerous visitors and friends.
Gordon Lauder was also a talented musician, often entertaining guests with piano performances and engaging in community affairs. While at Lauder, he directed various musical performances with the Omakau Musical Society and was an active member of the local Art Society and the Rotary Club of Alexandra for 30 years, including serving as president in both organizations.
A sports enthusiast, Lauder remained active in tennis well into his 90s and played a pivotal role in establishing a new tennis and hockey facility in Alexandra in 2011.
Lauder is survived by his son Geoffrey, daughter Christina Parker, and their families, including grandchildren John and Camille, and great-grandson Roimata. His legacy as an influential scientist, musician, and community leader will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.
