A significant fire engulfed a citrus tree nursery in Te Puna, Bay of Plenty, on November 20, 2024, causing extensive damage to the property owned by Grant and Sharon Tennet. The fast-moving blaze prompted a major emergency response, with over 40 firefighters from Tauranga, Matamata, and the surrounding areas battling the flames that spread rapidly across multiple properties. Fortunately, both the Tennet’s son and a staff member managed to escape the thick smoke unharmed.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand reported that the fire was non-suspicious and originated from an unattended slash pile burnoff on an adjacent property. The blaze was exacerbated by “unique westerly winds” with gusts ranging from 35 km/h to 60 km/h, leading to its rapid escalation. According to Jeff Maunder, the Bay of Plenty district manager for Fire and Emergency NZ, the investigation confirmed the accidental nature of the fire.

The Tennet family operates Copperfield Nurseries, a 5-hectare property that produces approximately 50,000 to 60,000 citrus trees annually for the national market. The loss of their nursery has left them devastated, as they face a lengthy recovery process.

In the wake of this incident, Grant Tennet expressed his gratitude that no lives were lost. He stated, “We are so grateful to God that everyone is safe,” highlighting the emotional toll the fire has taken on their family. The couple is now appealing for support as they look to rebuild their nursery and continue their business.

The response from the local community has been significant, with many expressing their solidarity with the Tennet family. As recovery efforts begin, the couple remains hopeful for a future where they can restore their nursery to its former state.
